Keeping Animals As Pets

Animals have been a part of human life for generations and it does not appear to be stopping anytime soon. Granted, technology has changed many of the uses we dedicate towards animals labor, keeping them as pets has not declined but increased over time.

Medical Benefits

Many experts now claim that there are many benefits to owning a pet or living on a farm environment, especially for young children. Studies have shown that children that interact with animals regularly have higher resistances to diseases and allergies promoting an overall, healthier existence.

Apart from the effects on your immune systems, animals can also possess therapeutic value to many people. There are clinics that utilize pet therapy for certain patients and many report high rates of success. This comes in two groups, patients suffering from chronic disease like heart and cancer conditions are better able to cope with their situation when they have a pet companion. Pets also provide lots of enjoyment and comfort for persons in nursing homes.

Pets at home

Most people living in a house of their own, or apartment complex that allows the keeping of animals, will have at least one pet. Many of us remember our child hood puppy or cat and still hold them in our hearts throughout our lives. In fact, we may not be able to imagine life without other animals and many of them have evolved, through our interaction, to depend on us as well.

There are some concerns with this practice though, generally, the problem is not extreme. However, it is possible to commit acts of cruelty and neglect to an animal when in the privacy of a home and this should be monitored more closely. There are many cases of animal cruelty where a dog or cat had gruesome acts of torture and mutilation done to them for the amusement of humans.

Animal fights

This is possibly one of the worse practices to evolve as a result of human interaction with animals and many governments try very hard to curb these activities. Animals deserve to be treated better, it is obvious that they have feelings and this should not be ignored.

We are a complex species and we are often capable of dominating over other species here on earth. While animals have been quite beneficial to us in many ways throughout our history, we must not forget that they are living breathing lifeforms, just like ourselves.
